"Reduce Everything You Want to Do to an Action You Can Do Right Now" -Jason Randal

Often we get caught up thinking about all the things we want to accomplish and dreaming about the possibilities we can achieve. While having a positive attitude and good thoughts may be a decent first step, none of it matters unless we call ourselves to action.

So often our own personal Martial Arts training is this same way when we think about our next graduation rank, competing at an international tournament, getting into tremendous physical shape and health, or being able to defend ourself.  In fact, as an instructor, I hear about all these ideals that people possess.  Sometimes I'm even told that people want to get in shape before they start doing classes with me.  What?!  You want to get in shape before you get in shape?  Sounds silly when you read it, right?  But, these are the things that people put up as obstacles for themselves.

You see it is clear to us what we want out of ourselves, but what is not clear is the best action steps to accomplish our goals. An instructor once told me, "You don't have to get it right; you just gotta get it going." As a planner, I think that there is a time and place to plan details out completely. But, sometimes this perfectionist attitude gets in our way. When people tell me they want to get in shape before they come work out in one of our classes it is not because they are unable to do the class, but are concerned with how people will perceive them when they are learning all this great, new stuff. Get rid of those obstacles and figure out what you can do RIGHT NOW to get started on your goals today.  Whether your goal is to save more money, get that nagging task list done, or start that new project the first action step is invaluable.  How can you take what you want to do and reduce it to an action you can do RIGHT NOW? I'm a big fan of baby steps to getting things done. They always say, "Rome wasn't built in a day."  So, I say to you, "You don't have to get it right; you just gotta get it going."

P.S. If your goals are to get in shape or improve yourself in the martial arts, come see me!
